Grandparents for rent

This innovative idea is gaining momentum abroad. The City of Differdange wishes to introduce this alternative childcare service in our city.

4 questions to… Corinne Lahure, social worker of the Senior Plus department

Our city, in cooperation with the Kannerschlass Foundation’s parenting school, is offering a free course for “surrogate grandparents” in October. What will you learn?

The aim is to provide a refresher course on childcare for people over 55. Future grandmothers and grandfathers should be less afraid to look after other people’s grandchildren or their own.

What practical skills are taught?

The course covers topics such as parenting, storytelling, first aid and learning with a child. In addition to imparting knowledge, the main aim is to encourage interaction between grandparents so that they can enjoy their new role.

Some grandparents have already raised children. Why is the course important?

When it comes to raising children, it is always good to refresh your knowledge and try new things. Even though “surrogate grandmothers” and “surrogate grandfathers” are not responsible for raising children, education is for everyone who has a relationship with them. Grandparents can be important role models for children and pass on values and knowledge. The African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” is very accurate, as parents are often overwhelmed by the sole responsibility for their child. Many families are single parents or have no relatives living in the area. With the Boma-Bopa service, we want to bring the generations together and promote social relations.

What happens after the course?

The new grandmothers and grandfathers are put in contact with families in Differdange to get to know each other. If all goes according to plan, the first childcare arrangements will be made. Grandparents who wish to refresh their knowledge in order to take care of their own grandchildren are also invited to participate in the course.
