As announced in October, a test phase was conducted on rue de Soleuvre from October 28 to November 10, 2024, to analyze the traffic situation.
This phase did not meet our expectations, and traffic patterns during this period caused some irritation among you, raising questions and criticism about the usefulness of such trials. These reactions are understandable, and we wish to provide additional information to clarify the purpose of this approach.
The objective of this test phase was to simulate different traffic configurations and document both short- and long-term behaviors. Part of the street was reserved for buses and residents, which led to a redistribution of traffic flows: some drivers turned around, others crossed through the neighborhood, while some ignored the prohibition of passage in both directions.
These reactions were analyzed over a defined period to understand how users adapt, or don’t adapt, to changes. In this context, we also observed traffic variation during school holidays compared to school periods, as well as the effect of having officers present to secure children’s crossings. Another key observation focused on the impact of this configuration at the intersection leading to downtown Differdange.
We worked in partnership with the Administration des ponts et chaussées to optimize traffic light timing. The goal of a test phase is not for everything to work perfectly from the start but to understand the reactions of drivers and residents. The results were documented through precise traffic measurements, which will serve as a basis for adjustments and additional simulations.
This series of tests provides us with concrete information to ultimately develop Soleuvre Street according to children’s needs, residents’ quality of life, and the necessary flow for local businesses and important locations, such as the 1535° Creative Hub, the church, and the school.
