The City of Differdange is launching its local energy community: the “e-community.” Electricity producers and consumers in the municipality can now exchange electricity generated from renewable energy sources with one another. The platform is open to everyone—individuals, businesses, and public entities. To learn more about the platform, the city invites its residents to a public information session on Tuesday, November 17, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at the 1535° Creative Hub. The project team will explain how the platform works and how to join, and will then answer your questions.
Community-Based Local Energy
The energy world is changing. In the future, electricity will no longer come primarily from large power plants, but from a multitude of small, decentralized facilities located near consumers and owned by citizens. The E-Community is part of this vision: to make the best possible use of locally generated electricity and to put the energy transition in the hands of the residents of Differdange.
The platform is organized as a cooperative and is seeking to obtain the status of a social enterprise (société d’impact sociétal); it is not profit-driven but rather aims to promote the common good and a sustainable, decentralized energy supply.
A simple concept
One person’s excess electricity can be used by another. The platform makes it possible to share the renewable energy generated within the community, reduce dependence on energy imports, and better control prices in the face of fluctuations in international markets.
Tangible Benefits
Generators benefit from a guaranteed feed-in tariff of 7.5 ct/kWh 365 days a year, which allows them to recoup the cost of their photovoltaic system more quickly and offers an attractive solution for older systems without a fixed tariff. Consumers benefit from regional electricity generated from renewable energy sources, lower electricity bills, and access to solar energy—even if their building does not allow for the installation of solar panels.
