Differdange receives the European Mission City label

Differdange becomes the first and only Luxembourg city to receive the Mission City label from the European Commission for its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.

The award ceremony took place on October 15, 2025, in Brussels during the European Week of Regions and Cities. Ekaterina Zaharieva, European Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation, officially presented this distinction to Differdange, alongside ten other prestigious European cities including Munich, Rome, and Amsterdam.

Strong Commitment to Climate Action

With this label, Differdange joins the exclusive group of 103 certified European cities committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 – twenty years ahead of the general European target.

Real Opportunities

  • The Mission City label opens up significant opportunities:
  • Access to the Climate City Capital Hub to facilitate public and private funding
  • Technical support from the European Investment Bank with a dedicated €2 billion fund
  • Enhanced international visibility to attract investments
  • Integration into the NetZeroCities network for sharing best practices

Differdange: Innovation Lab

As the only Luxembourg city in this program, Differdange becomes a true urban innovation laboratory. The solutions developed here for sustainable mobility, energy efficiency, and renewable energy will serve as models for other European cities.
