The City of Differdange is launching an innovative digital tool to combat littering, relying on artificial intelligence and citizen participation.
As part of its NetZeroCities strategy and the national Smart City call for projects, the City of Differdange is proud to announce that its DARLIn (Differdange AI Resource & Litter Intelligence Dashboard) project has been selected.
To actively involve citizens in a fun way in order to identify where, when, and in what quantities litter accumulates in the municipality.
Using a mobile app available on Android and iOS, users photograph the litter they collect. Artificial intelligence automatically analyzes plastic bottles, cigarette butts, packaging, etc., and records their precise locations.
The collected data will be used to generate Litter-Heatmaps, which will guide cleaning teams to the most affected areas.
An initial test phase will begin on Saturday, March 21, 2026, during the big forest clean-up. Volunteers are needed to try out the app in real-life conditions and share their feedback.
The app and artificial intelligence were developed in Luxembourg. All data is stored on local servers, ensuring its security and sovereignty.
