Differdange strengthens its security

On Friday, January 16, 2026, the city inaugurated its 48-camera system in Gerlache Park, in the presence of Minister of Internal Affairs Léon Gloden.

A strategic system for Gerlache Park

The Visupol system consists of 48 video surveillance cameras positioned in Gerlache Park and the surrounding streets. This area, identified as a priority in the Local Security Plan (PLS) adopted in 2022, now benefits from enhanced surveillance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

A piece of the security puzzle

For Mayor Guy Altmeisch, this installation is part of an overall vision: “The installation of this Visupol system is part of our comprehensive approach to combating insecurity, which combines coercive, preventive, and community measures. Following the pre-financing of the new police station, the reinforcement of public lighting, and the implementation of street education projects, Visupol represents an additional link in our security system.”

A modernized legal framework

Minister Léon Gloden highlighted the improvements made to the regulatory framework: “We have adapted the legal framework: in the future, authorization can be issued approximately four to five months after the municipality submits its request. In addition, authorizations for Visupol zones are now valid for five years instead of three.”

Important: in accordance with Luxembourg data protection legislation, only the Grand Ducal Police has access to the images. The City of Differdange has no access to these recordings.

Concrete objectives

The Visupol system will be particularly helpful in investigations related to:

  • vandalism;
  • drug trafficking;
  • violence;
  • theft.

The balance between security and community life

“We are aware that video surveillance is a divisive issue,” acknowledges the mayor. “That is why we have taken care to integrate it into a comprehensive approach that also emphasizes prevention and social support, particularly through the CollecDiff and Outreach Youthwork projects. The goal remains to facilitate community life in the spirit of our motto, ‘Different Together.’”
